Oops, Pow, Surprise! Posted by Hello

Let the Games Begin

I welcome the right's audacity. Time for America to take off the blinders:
Saturday, Nov. 20 - House and Senate negotiators have tucked a potentially far-reaching anti-abortion provision into a $388 billion must-pass spending bill, complicating plans for Congress to wrap up its business and adjourn for the year.

The provision may be an early indication of the growing political muscle of social conservatives who provided crucial support for Republican candidates, including President Bush, in the election.

House officials said Saturday morning that the final details of the spending measure were worked out before midnight and that the bill was filed for the House vote on Saturday.

The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals. Current federal law, aimed at protecting Roman Catholic doctors, provides such "conscience protection'' to doctors who do not want to undergo abortion training. The new language would expand that protection to all health care providers, including hospitals, doctors, clinics and insurers.
Expanding protection!

Gameday

Who should be the #2 team in the nation? Well, if Auburn wins, Southern Cal!

I have a feeling this is going to work itself out, but as of today, Auburn to me should be #1, USC #2, and Oklahoma #3, but that's me.

As for THE GAME, I like my Buckeyes to pull it out. I'm told I need to be an "optimist" so there you have it.

The Brawl

Good for Ron Artest.

After a week of embarrassing himself he put on display the bottom line of what it is to be human.

I don't care if he's supposed to be "above that." In response to fans overstepping their boundaries, and actually attempting to "punk" players like Artest, he turned the tide immediately, as did Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O'Neil, and Ben Wallace.

If fans think they can insert themselves the way some did then those fans deserve to get their heads handed to them. If I was one of those players, in the heat of the moment, I would have lost my shit, and assaulted those fans the same way Artest, and his teammates, did.

It does not look good for the NBA, but the league will benefit from the publicity, and on some level they deserve to because these players, while slightly in the wrong were more in the right.

Should they be thug-like on the court? No. But it happens. Just because it happens does not give fans the right to insert themselves. As a fan you are watching a show, regardless of what happens, not participating.

The NBA will hand out fines, but Artest, his teammates, and others did exactly what I would have done had someone did that to me.

No one has the right to spit on someone, throw a drink at someone, or cuss at someone endlessly. Fans have overstepped their boundaries over the years, and a few got what was coming to them. I hope other fans see what could happen and realize to be a bit more respectful to athletes, and other famous people. It's no different for those in Hollywood assaulted by photographers. Just because you can doesn't give you the right.

Good for those players. Sucks that it had to happen, but good for them.

Plus the fact that it's totally hilarious, and thank goodness it did happen!

Stay Right There

AP:
WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record) of Rhode Island, a moderate often at odds with GOP conservatives, disclosed Wednesday that the leader of Senate Democrats sounded him out about switching parties in the aftermath of President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election.

Chafee said he rebuffed the offer from Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada in a follow-up phone conversation the same day, adding that Reid offered "no deal or anything like that" as an incentive to cross the political aisle.

"We had a brief conversation, just hello," Chafee said in an interview. He publicly flirted with leaving the GOP in the days before and immediately after the election, but has since affirmed he will not switch.
While there's no question Senator Chafee fits more in line with the Corzines and Boxers of the world, I'd much rather see him making the talk show rounds as the Republican from Rhode Island.

Yahoo:
LONDON (AFP) - A British schoolteacher, attempting to motivate her pupils into making the most of each day, told them a meteorite was about to smash into the Earth and that they should all return home to say goodbye to their families, a report said.

The teacher at the high school in Manchester, northwest England, only realised her lecture was misjudged when many of the assembled teenagers started crying, the Sun newspaper said in its Friday edition.

Nothing Quite Like Setting a Record

"We've liberated the Afghan people..."
Afghanistan, Nov. 18 - Poppy cultivation in Afghanistan, the source of most of the opium and heroin on Europe's streets, was up sharply this year, reaching the highest levels in the country's history and in the world, the United Nations announced on Thursday.

"In Afghanistan, drugs are now a clear and present danger," said Antonio Maria Costa, director of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, on the release of the 2004 Afghanistan opium survey. "The fear that Afghanistan might degenerate into a narco-state is becoming a reality."

Dude, wake up, the "War on Drugs" is over. Now we're fighting the "War on Terror." We already won the war on drugs. You're so dated, man.

And This Year's Award for Stupidest Thing...

You'll Ever Read in a Major Newspaper goes to Anne Applebaum, Washington Post:
Two weeks after the election, the Internet rumor mill continues to spout stories of computer-stolen votes. No sooner are they disproved than others appear. Some are demanding an Ohio recount. Otherwise sober people are asking whether there can be smoke without fire. Last weekend the New York Times published an editorial that found "no evidence" of vote fraud but called electronic voting "a problem" all the same. After all, the editorial noted, there is "no way to be sure" that votes weren't changed "by secret software" inside the machines. If you're tempted to believe that analysis is rational, just ask yourself this question: Are you really sure that your bank isn't using secret software to steal $9.72 from your retirement account every week? And if the answer is no, why aren't you up in arms about that, too?
I'll give a cookie to the first person who comes up with just one obvious reason why this is so retarded.

Is Condi Rice Qualified?

Qualified for what? To be Secretary of State? Uhh, I have no idea because I don't know what the qualifications are.

Is she qualified to be Bush's SOS? Cleary! "Yessum. Yessum."

Bush and Co. will tell her what they want done. She will go abroad and tell other people. Other people will tell her no, and in all likelihood she will just become very frustrated like she did on television so often the last few years.

Condi Rice will stay on message, and be loyal. That's all they really want from her. Oh, and to look black, and like a woman. That's a big part of it.

Is she qualified to be a real President's SOS? No chance.

First off, what's her experience running a department? These are not students at Stanford. Her former role as advisor was easy. All she had to do is read to the President, tell him what he needed to say, and tell him how we need to counter the Soviet threat...

Second, just look at her history as advisor to the President. She was miserable. She denied there was anything that could be done to prevent 9/11, which is a blatant lie. She tried to pass blame to others, but was proven foolish. However, she did keep trying to protect the President, and that's why she remains. Not because she's capable but because she's incapable of actually doing something on her own, something other than the message. Trust me, they're happy Powell left on many levels.

Again, I don't know what the qualifications are, but I do know that she has one quality: loyalty. That's the only reason she is our Secretary of State.

If you want someone who is loyal to Bush, and not to America as a whole, she's your bitch.

And lastly, why don't all those people who think she's a good choice start telling us why, rather than us pointing out what a failure she's been in a much simpler role.

Explain to me!!!

Lets Not Get Loud About This...

Josh Marshall is picking up on the way some in Congress are addressing their constituents about the Tom Delay Issue.

Shorter Republicans, "Yes, we're a total embarrassment to this nation, but we'll do anything for power and control."

That Liberal Media

Not.

Please, Explain!!!

This is interesting:
A research team at UC Berkeley will report that irregularities associated with electronic voting machines may have award 130,000 - 260,000 or more excess votes to President George W. Bush in Florida in the 2004 presidential election. The study shows an unexplained discrepancy between votes for President Bush in counties where electronic voting machines were used versus counties using traditional voting methods. Discrepancies this large or larger rarely arise by chance -- the probability is less than 0.1 percent. The research team, led by Professor Michael Hout, will formally disclose results of the study at the press conference.

All issues of cheating aside, explain why the machines never give votes to the Democrats?

Explain why if we're a First World country we have to have Third World vote results?

Maybe because like in the third world, there are groups of people way up high who want the vote not to be counted. The only difference is our people have first class technology, so it seems like we're doing things right.

Again, many voting machines don't keep a paper record. Think about that!

Nukes: The Way to Avoid Being Attacked

I think nations are well aware of this, hence why it was pretty obvious Iraq didn't have them. Like we'd attack a nation with nukes? C'mon, seriously.

But check it:
PARIS, Nov. 17 - An Iranian opposition group leveled startling but unconfirmed charges on Wednesday that Iran had bought blueprints for a nuclear bomb and obtained weapons-grade uranium on the black market.

The group also charged that Iran was still secretly enriching uranium at an undisclosed Defense Ministry site in Tehran, despite an agreement with the Europeans two days ago to suspend all enrichment activities...

David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, a nonpartisan arms control group in Washington, said, "The timing of these revelations raises suspicions that the group is attempting to derail Iran's deal with the Europeans, particularly since there is no evidence to back up any of these claims."

He added that the allegation that Pakistan supplied Iran with highly enriched uranium in 2001 "seems preposterous, given the fact that was a year when the United States was really cracking down on Pakistan's nuclear export activities."

And by "cracking down" of course he means, "not cracking down."

He's Lying!!!!

Wait, he isn't lying, in fact his testimony totally squares with everything else he has said:
Richard Clarke testified:

-The intelligence in 2000 about the two plots "was an eye-opening thing for those of us informed and we began to think that just because you are an American citizen doesn't mean you shouldn't be subject to some scrutiny if you show up having connections to these people."

-In the Clinton years, "there were people in the administration who were very seized with this issue, beginning with the president. ... It is very rare in my experience when the president of the United States picks an issue after his administration has begun, because the world has changed, and says, this is a priority, guys. ... If 9/11 hadn't happened, I think historians could go back and look at what the Clinton administration did ... and say, 'boy, were those guys overreacting.'" Clarke's qualified praise for the Clinton administration mirrors his more recent testimony to the Sept. 11 panel and the account he gave in his book, "Against All Enemies."

-Other governments helped break up terrorist cells in 20 to 25 countries during the Clinton administration. "I would say that hundreds of people were arrested and detained either by a host country where cells were broken up."

-One of Clarke's nightmares was that the CIA would have been ordered, over internal protests, to use an unmanned, armed aircraft known as a Predator to kill bin Laden. Clarke backed such an operation, but feared his opponents would say: "Look what Clarke did. He assassinated bin Laden and in retaliation for that they blew up the World Trade Center."

-Government officials knew, beginning in 1997, that if they "decapitated al-Qaida, that it would grow other heads." Officials had to be ready to accept the negative criticism for killing bin Laden and then having al-Qaida terrorism continue.

Senator Bill Frist led the charge to have Clarke's testimony declassified in order to prove how confident he was in Bush. Well, that didn't really happen, but who cares? I mean, Americans are convinced of Bush's "chosen" path.

Standing Tall on Principle

WaPo:
The Senate voted 52 to 44 yesterday to let the government borrow an additional $800 billion to head off a fiscal crisis that could occur when the $7.4 trillion national debt ceiling is reached in the next few days.

Democrats used the occasion to criticize GOP fiscal policies, including tax cuts, for causing a flood of red ink that drove the federal budget deficit to more than $400 billion in fiscal 2004. But Republicans warned that failure to raise the limit would prevent the government from sending out Social Security checks and providing necessary services.

It was nearly a party-line vote, with just one Republican, Sen. John Ensign (Nev.), voting against the proposal while only two Democrats, Sens. John Breaux (La.) and Zell Miller (Ga.), voted in favor. The House is set to take up the bill today.

When President Bush took office, the public debt was at $5.9 trillion and was declining because of the first federal budget surpluses in decades. Yesterday's increase was the third in as many years and will raise the government's borrowing authority to a record $8.2 trillion.

So much to say but I'll save it for the end of the day rant...

Riiiiight...

NYTIMES:
"Attorneys tell me you can be indicted for just about anything in this country, in any county or community," said Mr. Bonilla, an ally of Mr. DeLay. "Sometimes district attorneys who might have partisan agendas or want to read their name in the paper could make a name for themselves by indicting a member of the leadership, regardless of who it may be, and therefore determine their future. And that's not right."
This story about Tom Delay is just insane.

Republicans crafted a rule in the early 90s to get Democratic leaders into trouble, and now, not so important.

It's just like every other lie, and every other false stance. Like their stance against DEFICITS! Like their stance against the weak dollar. Like their stance against nation building.

Cheers to Republicans for you are truly an embarrassment.

Tom Delay's comment is fabulous:
Republican lawmakers "fixed the rules so that Democrats cannot use our rules against us," he said.

Mr. DeLay said he did not expect to be indicted, but added, "This has nothing to do with whether I was going to be or not going to be.''

These are not the rules of Congress, these are only REPUBLICAN RULES.

How

I was going to title this "When" but chose "How."

I'm listening to Bowie's "Life on Mars" and wondering "when" the world will realise that life after death does not exist. The sooner that happens the easier life will be.

"How" can we convince the world to live for today?

Religious wars, which we're currently engaged in, do not expedite this. Don't kid yourself, we are in a RELIGIOUS war, and it was supposedly religion that changed the last US election.

Have your religion, let it guide you, but the moment your religion moves beyond you, and into the realm of 'us' is the moment when conflict begins.

Someone, and I hope to be part of that someone, needs to make this thought a fact. A reality.

Latincroft

I'm hearing that Senator Pat Leahy will not contest Alberto Gonzales's nomination as Bush's choice for US Attorney General.

So let me get this straight: The biggest issue is the "War on Terror," so I'm told. With regards to the "War on Terror" Gonzales has been nothing short of terrible. Combine his nomination together with the Patriot Act, and how long before this guy is taking away rights? Not long.

Take a look back to when he was an advisor to Bush in Texas, offering useless opinions, unless you think streamlining Capital Murder is a good thing.

The Democrats must be thinking, "We are going to have to take so many stands in the future that we just have to let this one pass."

That may be true, but if you had any guts you'd take a stand on EVERY NOMINATION that you thought was wrong. Eventually, the public and the media would be brought over to the Democrats side, and people would start to focus on what it is they're taking a stand on.

Don't make your case once, or twice, when Supreme Court nominees (and Federal) are coming around. You'll lose that battle in the soundbite and snippet war on TV in a flash. Start making the case now.

Oh Come Off It

I watched the halftime show of the Eagles vs Cowboys game on Monday night, and what shocked me was not Nicolette Sheridan, but the fact that ABC DIDN'T RUN HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FIRST HALF!

I watched the entire show just to see Donovan McNabb's scramble and throw play, but guess what, it never happened!

Now people are making some noise about the "Desperate Housewife" and TO. Give me a break:
The National Football League, still chastened by the "wardrobe malfunction" that exposed Janet Jackson's right breast during the Super Bowl halftime show on CBS in February, was stunned Monday night by another incident, this one on ABC.

In the scripted introduction to "Monday Night Football," Nicollette Sheridan, who portrays the serial divorcée Edie Britt on the popular ABC series "Desperate Housewives," wore only a towel as she flirted with Philadelphia Eagles receiver Terrell Owens in an otherwise empty locker room. After asking Owens to miss the game, Sheridan dropped the towel; the camera showed her upper body from behind. Owens, smiling broadly, said the Eagles would have to win without him, and Sheridan leapt into his arms.

Yesterday, a league spokesman called the sketch "inappropriate and unsuitable for our 'Monday Night Football' audience," and the league office expressed its displeasure to ABC executives. ABC Sports apologized, saying in a statement, "We agree that the placement was inappropriate."
Who is this offending? Is it "the children?" Trust me, children in the 5th grade can see a lot more garbage on TV than Sheridan's bare ass, and the odds that any of them were even tuned in is unlikely.

You know, in Britan they show breasts in practically every publication; they play a lot looser with the rules. However, they also clamp down much harder on pornography. Get it? Looser with the stuff that's light nudity, and intense on the bad stuff. Seriously, do you get it?

The House of Morals

Are these guys the biggest fucking jokers of all time?
House Republicans proposed changing their rules last night to allow members indicted by state grand juries to remain in a leadership post, a move that would benefit Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) in case he is charged by a Texas grand jury that has indicted three of his political associates, according to GOP leaders.

The proposed rule change, which several leaders predicted would win approval at a closed meeting today, comes as House Republicans return to Washington feeling indebted to DeLay for the slightly enhanced majority they won in this month's elections. DeLay led an aggressive redistricting effort in Texas last year that resulted in five Democratic House members retiring or losing reelection. It also triggered a grand jury inquiry into fundraising efforts related to the state legislature's redistricting actions.

House GOP leaders and aides said many rank-and-file Republicans are eager to change the rule to help DeLay, and will do so if given a chance at today's closed meeting. A handful of them have proposed language for changing the rule, and they will be free to offer amendments, officials said. Some aides said it was conceivable that DeLay and Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) ultimately could decide the move would be politically damaging and ask their caucus not to do it. But Rep. Jack Kingston (Ga.), another member of the GOP leadership, said he did not think Hastert and DeLay would intervene.

He's basically being indicted because of the actions he took to actually strengthen the Republican majority.

Reid is Limping Back!

The future Mr. Nobody:
Senator Harry Reid of Nevada was elected the Senate's minority leader today and vowed to strive for good working relationships with President Bush and Republican lawmakers.

Mr. Reid was elected without opposition, as was Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois to succeed Mr. Reid as minority whip, the second-highest Democratic post in the Senate.

"You don't have to shout to prove you love America," Mr. Reid said today after he was elected.

A few days ago, when it was already clear that he had locked up the leader's post, he rebuffed any suggestion that his party was all but powerless. "We still have 45," he said. "I think it is very clear on matters of principle that we can stand our ground."

On some matters of principle, Mr. Reid has seemed more like a Republican than a Democrat. He opposes abortion and co-sponsored a constitutional amendment that would have banned flag-burning.

Mr. Reid has demonstrated an ability to reach across the aisle. In the spring of 2001, he played a big part in persuading Senator Jeffords to leave the Republican Party.
Yes, Harry Reid from the great state of NEVADA! Don't worry Nevada, there will be no nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain now!

Seriously, why is this happening? Nevada is a SWING state, and Harry Reid can't afford to be "out of touch" with the people of Nevada. The Senate Minority Leader needs to be someone who likely cannot lose, and will set the table. Not Republican-lite.

I hope this is not the beginning of things to come, or else we'll be watching Reid limp off the court...

Do I Think He Believes It?

I'm not really sure if Rush Limbaugh believes the stuff he spews, but one has to think he does on some level. I've been told "he's an entertainer first" by too many people. Even if that's true there's really no way to do what he does, and I did, and not believe most of it.

I just heard his show for maybe the third time since he got off crack, and man was it funny.

He was actually attempting to make the argument that "the people on the left" are so willing to assume the Iraqi that was killed by a US Soldier was innocent, and the soldier automatically guilty. Well, that's a big leap even for Rush.

Before Rush launched into his little speech against "the left" he told the audience that he was never a soldier, nor had any part of his life involved combat on any level, but since that's the case he has done his best to "learn about" all the things a soldier deals with, like boot camp, etc.

If this were true, and he truly is concerned, he would have joined the military. That's Bullshit Rush Argument #1. His only concern is using soldiers to help push his own agenda: more money for Rush, and like minded scum.

The case of the soldier being investigated, and the death of a militant is not mutually exclusive. In fact, the two are totally independent of each other. Both can be wrong! If the US Soldier is guilty of a war crime that does not exhonerate the militant who was trying to kill him. However, the US is SUPPOSED to have higher standards, and when someone is on the floor, wounded, and not a threat, a US Soldier is not supposed to kill the militant in cold blood. That's what this case is about, obviously.

Rush went on to say that it's the people on the left who want to use this case to bash George W. Bush who they have never seen as legitimate. Well, sure, they may not view him as legitimate, but it's more so the war itself that many people do not view as legitimate, but those two things are also independent. Furthermore, I haven't heard anyone on the left talking about this case on any level, and yet Rush is doing a show on it. Have you heard "the left" talking about what should happen to this soldier? Is there a particular person speaking for us?

Well, that's the point: give the minions talking points and opinions before they even hear the story on the evening news.

The grandest part of Rush was when he said it's the people on the "left" (again, i know, it's crazy) who didn't want us seeing images of "the falling towers on 9/11" and the "pictures of what's happening around the world."

According to Rush, all they want to see is the pictures of "Abu Gharib" and "photos of US Soldiers committing crimes." It's truly amazing because I think he actually believes this.

Truth is, it's the people on the left who have asked to see the soldiers coming home to Dover in flag-draped coffins. It's the people on the left who want the government to stop planting war images and imbedding reporters, and it's the people on the left that want every image from war shown on television so the people at home know exactly what it is they are voting for.

With regard to this case, I agree with Rush that it's crazy for anyone on the left, or the right (he didn't say that), to say this soldier, or any soldier, is guilty of a crime without going through the legal process. Granted, it does not look good in this particular case, but the soldier still deserves the benefit of the doubt.

We cannot sit at home, or at our desks, and pretend to understand what is going through the mind of a soldier whose job it is to kill militants, and clear the area. All the while, the soldier gets maybe 3 hours of sleep, and is being shot at for days on end. I can see how a soldier can build up a hatred for his/her enemy, and how things can get out of control. It's only natural. But seriously, Rush and like-minded fools, Abu Gharib, and other events were not similar to this case.

It's too bad President Bush put the soldiers into this unwinnable war, for a pussy like him (or Rush) would never be as brave as any of these soldiers, regardless of how much they try to "learn about it."

Go Pa

USATODAY:
Frankly, I have no idea what inspired Penn State's players to make four consecutive stops to win a nothing game in a nowhere football place. The only explanation is that they listened to a coach who told them they could never quit, a coach who now needs to follow their lead.

Penn State plays its final game Saturday at Michigan State. It shouldn't be Paterno's final game, not as long as he believes he can meet the challenge of a 40th season as head coach. If Penn State wants to fire him, fine, let Penn State fire him but good before he turns 78 next month. But Paterno shouldn't resign because gasbag boosters are taking out newspaper ads or because some Internet gremlin is selling hooded "JoePa Must Go" sweatshirts for $23.99.

He should only leave the morning his heart tells him it's time to leave. Maybe Paterno will take the mike today at his usual Tuesday news conference and announce that the Michigan State game will be it, that he no longer has the desire to lead; Paterno declined an interview request Monday through a school spokesman. As long as he can honestly say that decision has nothing to do with public pressure, it's the right one to make.

But chances are Paterno will not be delivering any concession speech. He told his players last week he wasn't going anywhere, pounding his fist against a table for punctuation. In his news conferences, Paterno has been as consistent as his white socks and black shoes, saying, in effect: You're not getting rid of me that easily.
If Joe Pa doesn't quit then he should, in effect, be fired for not quitting.

The team is terrible and he's the only reason. It's not the play calls. It's not that his ability to coach has diminished. It's one thing: He does not get the top talent anymore. And why should he?

College athletes want a few things when they choose their school. The first is playing time. The second, they want to know their coach is going to be there while they're there. This is the biggest issue when it comes to a kid who signs a letter of intent only to watch the coach leave a few weeks later for the NFL. So many of them want out immediately. Why in the world would a player goto Penn State if it's quite possible the coach is going to be gone the next season? Not a lot of players would.

This is why Joe Paterno should step down now.

Last year he missed Chad Henne, Rory Nicol, Devon Lyons, and Kyle Mitchum, 4 of the best 6-7 players in the state.

This is a Good Thing...

I expect John Snow to say.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Wholesale prices shot up 1.7% last month, biggest gain in nearly 15 years and well above expectations, as energy costs skyrocketed and food prices surged, a government report said Tuesday.
Even without volatile food and energy prices, producer prices climbed a relatively swift 0.3% in October, the Labor Department said, well ahead of the 0.1% gain economists had expected.

The increase in the overall Producer Price Index, a gauge of prices received by farms, factories and refineries, was the largest since January 1990 and easily outstripped expectations for a 0.5% gain.

Analysts said the report buttressed the case for continued interest rate increases from the Federal Reserve, even though a drop in crude oil prices in recent weeks may herald less inflation pressure ahead.

I remember last week hearing it's a good thing the value of a dollar was decreasing because it makes foreign goods more expensive, and could help the trade deficit!

Too Bad He Couldn't Save the Band...

Daily News:
Legendary rocker David Lee Roth, the famed front man for the '80s megaband Van Halen, is apparently reinventing himself as an emergency medical technician.

The other night at the Four Seasons restaurant, the 48-year-old millionaire musician revealed to dinner companions that he has been living in a modest apartment on the lower East Side and showing up most days for EMT training.

"I used to be a surgical orderly in South Central L.A.," he told me yesterday. "I started that when I got out of junior college in the early '70s, and that led to a variety of things in the outdoor medical fire force and training with the Green Berets. ... My father was a surgeon and uncles and my cousins were also in the medical community, so I come by it natural."

Roth, who said he has relocated to New York from his estate in Pasadena, Calif., specifically to train as an EMT, said he hopes to obtain his certification in November and work as a volunteer one weekend per month.

"I want to be working in the outer boroughs. This city promises great color and insight in each and every neighborhood," Roth said. "On the upper East Side, it's gonna be heart attacks and stomach aches. But in other neighborhoods, it's all trauma."

Yesterday Roth - who has been very low key about his new pursuit - demurred, "You're getting way off on a tangent, my friend. My dream would be to save a Scandinavian hikerette."

Keepin' It Real

LAITMES:
A hip-hop music awards ceremony in Santa Monica erupted in chaos Monday night after rap pioneer Dr. Dre, awaiting a lifetime achievement award, apparently was punched in the face and his bodyguards set upon the attacker.

The second annual Vibe awards presentations were halted as police swarmed the hangar at Santa Monica Airport, where about 1,000 people were attending the show. Santa Monica police summoned reinforcements from neighboring law enforcement agencies.

In the chaos, a man was stabbed, police said. The victim, identified by police only as a 26-year-old Los Angeles resident, was in stable condition at a hospital.

The show, named for the magazine that celebrates hip-hop and other urban music, was being taped for broadcast today on UPN when the violence broke out about 7:30 p.m.

ESPN's Role

ESPN really is ridiculous.

It's one thing that Maurice Clarett has caused problems, and Ohio State is probably guilty of committing some infractions with regard to him, and many other players, but ESPN has helped create problems the entire time.

It all began when Clarett did the ESPN the Magazine Cover Story in 2002, and ESPN misquoted him by saying he was declaring for the NFL. At the time he did not say it.

Brent Musburger then went on ABC TV and acted as if ESPN and ABC were two entirely separate entities, and that a "magazine is reporting that Clarett may try for the NFL..." As if 90%, or more, of the viewers have any clue the two are the same company?

Now ESPN digs up more Clarett news, and runs it as if Ohio State is guilty, and Clarett the alter boy. In addition, their coverage of Ohio State the last few days has been flat out dishonest.

It has been learned that over 85 cars are provided to members of Ohio State's athletic staff. The effort is to make Ohio State seem guilty of something when this practice is allowed by the NCAA, and is used by EVERY MAJOR FOOTBALL SCHOOL. Does ESPN mention this in their reporting? Not a chance. They are just making a story, and of course, hurting the good/honest people within the program for their own gain.

Sure, there are problems at Ohio State, and I'm sure they are no different than the problems at Michigan, or Michigan State.

Maybe ESPN should start doing some real journalism, and do an expose on the life of certain college athletes and the NCAA's treatment of them? No, no, that would be real journalism.

So What You're Saying Is It Really Worked?

NYTIMES:
The death of a California woman in January after she took an abortion pill prompted federal drug regulators on Monday to strengthen the warning label on the drug, RU-486, also known as mifepristone.

The death was the third in the United States that the Food and Drug Administration has linked to the pill since its approval in 2000...

Opponents of abortion say the latest death demonstrates that mifepristone is unsafe and should be withdrawn from the market. Abortion rights advocates, on the other hand, say that it has been used by nearly 360,000 women in the United States and that bad outcomes with it are exceptionally rare.

In the case of the latest death, though, the argument does not end there. Dr. Cynthia Summers, spokeswoman for mifepristone's American maker, Danco Laboratories, said she did not believe the fatality should be attributed to the drug, since the coroner's report said the woman had instead taken methotrexate, a cancer medication that has also been used to induce abortions...

Among abortion opponents calling Monday for mifepristone's removal from the market was National Right to Life. "I think the evidence is mounting that this drug is unsafe," said Dr. Randall O'Bannon, the group's director of education and research.

Wendy Wright, senior policy director of Concerned Women for America, a conservative women's group that has petitioned the F.D.A. to withdraw the drug, said the agency's action was insufficient.

"How many more women have to die before F.D.A. will put women's health and lives above the politics of abortion?" Ms. Wright said.

Is the World Upside Down?

I am just wondering what the qualifications are for Secretary of State these days besides being black.

I guess since Condoleeza Rice kept to the script, and was basically ignored since her 9/11 hearing, she's not qualified to be Secretary of State because of her depth of knowledge with regard to the Soviet Union!

"No one had any idea they'd attack our buildings..."

I'm betting she doesn't get the gig. I'm saying she doesn't deserve the gig. But at this point is anything a surprise? Aside from the few times they get something right?

Richard Lugar, we'd love to have you since that'll erase you from a future presidential bid...

Here's a Plank...

Being that those who can afford the most class have turned the "Class War" into a battle between Elitist Democrats who want to give away money vs. Compassionate Republicans who want to take away aid, here's an idea by Leon Freidman, a professor at Hofstra University's School of Law from the Wilson Quarterly - Winter/2001:
Abolish the Estate tax, but impose a 1% tax on the net worth of the richest one percet of Americans "on a regular basis during their lifetime." This, he says, would generate more than $100 Billion a year in federal revenues, "reduce the national debt, shore up Social Security and Medicare, allow for significant tax decreases for the middle class, and eliminate the need for an estate tax."
It'd be pretty hard for the Compassionate crowd to argue against it, but I'm sure they'd find away.

Will There be Moderates?

For the last 4 years we heard "Powell is a moderate...Powell balances out the Cabinet...Powell is a voice of reason..."

Now we're hearing that Senator Arlen Specter is too moderate to head the Senate Judiciary Committee. He's not wingnuttish enough. He has to prove his credentials to conservatives, and fear not, he can.

But with Powell gone, and Ashcroft gone, what's going to happen? The President believes he has a mandate to govern further to the right, and he has no re-election to worry about.

Will their be moderates in this cabinet? In this Congress? IN THIS COUNTRY?

For the record, according to the polls, Bush got less of the "moderate vote" this time around than he did in the last election (8% to 9%). It was the conservative base that came out to vote, and that he won over.

So I guess we'll wait and see...

Smart Bombs with Moronic Leaders?
The Associated Press
Nov. 14, 2004 - In the weeks before the crushing military assault on his hometown, Bilal Hussein sent his parents and brother away from Fallujah to stay with relatives.

The 33-year-old Associated Press photographer stayed behind to capture insider images during the siege of the former insurgent stronghold.

"Everyone in Fallujah knew it was coming. I had been taking pictures for days," he said. "I thought I could go on doing it."

In the hours and days that followed, heavy bombing raids and thunderous artillery shelling turned Hussein's northern Jolan neighborhood into a zone of rubble and death. The walls of his house were pockmarked by coalition fire.

"Destruction was everywhere. I saw people lying dead in the streets, wounded were bleeding and there was no one to come and help them. Even the civilians who stayed in Fallujah were too afraid to go out," he said.

"There was no medicine, water, no electricity nor food for days."
Something like this.

It's One Thing to Make an Accusation...

...It's another thing to write an article with this as your opening paragraph:
WASHINGTON -- The White House has ordered the new CIA director, Porter Goss, to purge the agency of officers believed to have been disloyal to President George W. Bush or of leaking damaging information to the media about the conduct of the Iraq war and the hunt for Osama bin Laden, according to knowledgeable sources.

"The agency is being purged on instructions from the White House," said a former senior CIA official who maintains close ties to both the agency and to the White House. "Goss was given instructions ... to get rid of those soft leakers and liberal Democrats. The CIA is looked on by the White House as a hotbed of liberals and people who have been obstructing the president's agenda."
We go about our daily lives, not really paying too much attention to the inner working of Washington D.C., but what these people have done, and are continuing to do is completely insane, and they don't care because no one cares.

One day you'll care, and like on 9/11 people will ask, "How did we not know!?!?!"

Like a Dog Without a Bone...

I await this:
Rapper Snoop Dogg's version of the 1971 song "Riders on the Storm" makes its debut tomorrow, but it will not premiere on MTV or on the radio. Instead, the song, which was recorded with the surviving members of The Doors and includes outtakes of Jim Morrison's vocals, will be heard on Need For Speed Underground 2, a video game from Electronic Arts.

Ok, let me set the scene.

My friend Don Juan Bellanouche plays poker online, and today he came across a US Soldier who couldn't sleep, so he too was online playing some cards in the digital world.

Spy vs. Spy (repost)

WaPo:
The deputy director of the CIA resigned yesterday after a series of confrontations over the past week between senior operations officials and CIA Director Porter J. Goss's new chief of staff that have left the agency in turmoil, according to several current and former CIA officials.

John E. McLaughlin, a 32-year CIA veteran who was acting director for two months this summer until Goss took over, resigned after warning Goss that his top aide, former Capitol Hill staff member Patrick Murray, was treating senior officials disrespectfully and risked widespread resignations, the officials said.

Yesterday, the agency official who oversees foreign operations, Deputy Director of Operations Stephen R. Kappes, tendered his resignation after a confrontation with Murray. Goss and the White House pleaded with Kappes to reconsider and he agreed to delay his decision until Monday, the officials said.

Several other senior clandestine service officers are threatening to leave, current and former agency officials said.

The disruption comes as the CIA is trying to stay abreast of a worldwide terrorist threat from al Qaeda, a growing insurgency in Iraq, the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan and congressional proposals to reorganize the intelligence agencies. The agency also has been criticized for not preventing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and not accurately assessing Saddam Hussein's ability to produce weapons of mass destruction.

"It's the worst roiling I've ever heard of," said one former senior official with knowledge of the events. "There's confusion throughout the ranks and an extraordinary loss of morale and incentive."
That took long.

Oh, and this is pretty funny, from the same article:
Michael V. Kostiw, who was Goss's first choice for executive director -- the agency's third-ranking official -- withdrew his name after The Washington Post reported that he had left the agency 20 years ago after having been arrested for stealing a package of bacon.
He was just trying to cut down all the pork in Washington...

I still find it ridiculous that Bush chose a partisan like Goss, who was the head of the House Intel Committee, a group of people who obviously got the entire WMD case wrong, as well as Al Qaeda, yet he's now head of the CIA.

Iraq

The WaPo has a database of everyone who has died in Iraq.

Take a look.

RIP Ole Dirt M'Girt

the times:
Russell T. Jones, the rap artist known as O.D.B., collapsed and died yesterday at a recording studio in Manhattan, the police said. Mr. Jones, a 35-year-old native of Fort Greene, Brooklyn, was a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan and made a large imprint on rap music in the 1990's.

Gabriel Tesoriero, a spokesman for Roc-a-Fella Records, for which Mr. Jones recorded, said that Mr. Jones complained of chest pains before he collapsed. The police said the cause of death would be determined by the city's medical examiner, but they said there was no evidence of foul play.

Mr. Jones was found unconscious at the recording studio, at 545 West 34th Street, at 4:40 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the authorities said.

Mr. Jones formed the Wu-Tang Clan with two of his cousins, Robert Diggs and Gary Grice, and their first album, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)," released in 1993, was considered widely influential on the evolving genre of rap music.
