Things

I'm in England for UFC 90, which is free tonight on Spike TV at 9 PM (I think). Look for me during the last fight. There's an outside chance I may be cornering Marcus Davis too :-)

Saw 4 girls BRAWL on the streets of Birmingham. So hilarious. One tiny girl headbutted another in the face. Ridiculous, I tell ya.

Apparently, the police here pretty much wrap you up, hit you a few times, calm things down, maybe hit you again, and then let you go. Definitely fun to watch.

Last night I was talking politics with some local folks and a few fighters/trainers who are here. After a bit of economic chat a friend of mine says, "This is not the Dave I know. You sound like you're pulling for Bush!"

To which I responded, "I AM! How can I not be?!?!? I don't like the guy, but if his numbers go up that means he is doing something right, and I want him to do the right things!"

I'm not rooting for him to lose, and I never have. Thing of it is, I always knew he'd do the wrong thing, pointed it out over and over to his sheep, and they never listened. I didn't want him to win because I knew he was an incompetent moron, but to assume I want him to do bad, that's just way off.

I don't root against the success of the nation. I root for us to do the right things, whomever is in control.

It's rather pleasant here in Birmingham, weather wise. The city is not as dull as many claimed it would be.

Phish tickets went on sale today for the Hampton shows. They sold out in under 2 minutes, 30,000 tickets.

Hail to the internet!

Thought(s)

I was extremely fortunate today to catch part of the Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly when a caller mentioned to Bill the thing about Obama being a socialist.

O'Reilly agreed.

In his own calm way he said, "The people know this, Bob. We've explained it here on the Factor..."

Bob, "With Obama in the White House and a Democratic Congress, I fear the worst..."

"Well, Bob, you should. This is what we're going to get. This is what's going to happen. We explained this for weeks...on the Factor..."

Which just makes me wonder, has there ever been a more socialist program in the United States than the one THEY want implemented right now? Yet it seems the bankers are all cheering it on!

This weekend's Sunday NYTIMES had an article about the "new plan" they've put into place, or are trying to. I thought the second paragraph here was just the cat's meow:
The Treasury Department’s surprising turnaround on the issue of buying stock in banks, which has now become its primary focus, has raised questions about whether the administration squandered valuable time in trying to sell Congress on a plan that officials had failed to think through in advance.

It has also raised questions about whether the administration’s deep philosophical aversion to government ownership in private companies hindered its ability to look at all options for stabilizing the markets
.
Exactly.

Conservatives "believe" in things, regardless of whether those things are true, or not. Hence, as I've mentioned time and time again, why they hate science. Science (and fact) can prove them wrong, so they no likey that. They have BELIEFS! And, they BELIEVE THEM!

When you believe in something because you just believe it, even when contrary evidence is available to disprove your belief, yet you go on believing, you're what I like to call an idiot.

A great example of this would be the belief that trickle-down economics and tax cuts clearly work. They don't. They could, in theory, but they don't when put to work across the board. This is why Democrats don't BELIEVE IN THEM as the panacea Republicans do.

When faced with the fact tax cuts don't work Republicans shift the goalposts and argue, "you should be able to keep your money." They will always find a reason as to why tax cuts are a good thing, or at the very least, the right thing.

Truth be told, they probably don't really BELIEVE tax cuts work every time, since they can't all be that blind to the truth/facts. The reason they do is because tax cuts are easy. It's easy to say, "we're going to give you your money...you're going to keep more of your money...they want to take your money...it's your money...BELIEVE US!" Yes, they support tax cuts because it's easy, and for no other reason. It's a vote buyer. If they really believe in tax cuts all the time it's only because they've subscribed to the party line, but it shouldn't be at all surprising considering many of their views on religion. For many, their money is actually their religion, or vice versa, or some shit...it all ties in neatly...in Church.

Tax cuts are just an example. The whole "market will fix it" is somewhat of a similar example. To believe in one thing, at the expense of the other without consideration is just dumb, and it's quite possible this White House did make the recent problems worse because of their aversion to looking at something a different way. That way happens to be a SOCIAL PROGRAM, aka, SOCIALISM.

Socialism, not great for society as a whole, but to deny the fact social programs work, and sometimes government intervention is wholly necessary is flat out childish and need I say stupid. Yet this is probably exactly what happened. Because of their "beliefs" things are probably worse, and this is not the first time this has happened.

(I could get into the whole socialism thing, but I'll spare you for now)

I will repeat, if Democrats were presented with facts showing tax cuts/trickle down as the answer to economic problems, or say stem cell research where embryos were not destroyed as the answer to medical/health problems, they'd be for these things.

This is how adults look at problems.
