Been Thinking About the NBA
I'll admit I've been following NBA Free Agency somewhat closely, and much more closely than I did the actual NBA. My hoops involvement the last, I don't know, 3, or 4, or...12 years has been staring at a Knicks boxscore from time to time while eating a whole wheat everything bagel with whitefish salad, while drinking an iced coffee, hoping to the man above I don't have to take a dump before I get home. Reading boxscores + mayo + coffee brings on a certain sensation.
Anyway...the Lebron (Wade/Bosh) hype is coming to an end, thankfully. If I have hear NY's 1050 AM, ESPN Radio run one more promo saying, "You're listening to the LEBRON WATCH, on 1050 ESPN..." I'm going to ran a blunt object through the stereo of my car. Michael Kay, you're never right, and you'll be wrong again about Lebron in New York. Kay likes to say this over and over in the hopes an audience will tune into the man who is spinning a positive web.
So here's what I'd like to see happen.
First, Lebron is staying in Cleveland. He's going to sign a 2 year deal with an option for a third year. He'll give Cleveland a chance to win, and then we'll get to do this again in 2 years. It'll be great.
Second, Chris Bosh, quite possibly the lamest hoopster on the planet. Making a decision based on what Lebron and Wade do. Get a life, dude. Have some balls. The other day he was saying he's "not a New York guy", that he's a "small town guy..." Good for you. If that's the case, stay in Toronto. Both Miami and Chicago are not small towns, genius. In fact, if you want to be invisible, which is what he's been saying, then New York is actually the perfect place because it's pretty much the only city in America where people don't give two shits if there's a famous person in the restaurant. They expect it. In fact, many of the other patrons can buy your contract, so they don't really care. He's annoying.
Third, I'm hopeful Wade and Bosh end up somewhere together, with Lebron in Cleveland because that will create a sweet Eastern rivalry. With Chicago on the move, even if they don't get a bigtime FA, it'll be interesting.
And last we have the Knicks. I do not want Lebron, or Wade. I want a team that beats those guys. If the Knicks go out and sign Amare Stoudamire they are starting something nice. After that they need to solidify the most important position on the floor, the point guard. The idea of Chris Paul is interesting, but Paul has bad knees and won't be around a long time. The answer here is Tony Parker, who is no longer wanted in San Antonio. Parker is the next Derek Harper for the Knicks: a cagey veteran with playoff experience, a floor general, hits big shots, and knows how to win. With Tony Douglas to spell him off the bench it's perfect.
Then, finally, after you have Stoudamire, Parker, Galinari being setup on the wing, and Wilson Chandler who can do so many things, you are on your way to forming a great team. But the final move, once all the other free agents are elsewhere is waiting one year and getting Carmelo Anthony. Once Melo is on the team, at age 27-28, you will have one of the best teams in the league. A #1 scorer, a veteran point guard, a dead eye shooter, some great defenders, tons of length, and a team that can compete with any team in the league. With Melo as your star taking on Lebron, Wade, and everyone else, the Garden will be off the chain fun again.
So that's my hope for free agency...and that Michael Kay stops talking about.......everything.
